Position Vacancy

     First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso, Indiana, is seeking a Director of Youth Ministries to work with youth in sixth grade through high school. This person is charged with encouraging youth inside and outside First United Methodist Church to form a connection and loving relationship with Jesus Christ consistent with the mission, vision and core values of First United Methodist Church. The Director will be expected to set goals and to formulate short-term and long-range plans while developing a vision for youth ministries.

     The Director of Youth Ministries will work closely with other staff and with volunteers to plan and implement weekly middle and high school youth events that foster discipleship. Other responsibilities include planning and implementing diverse activities such as mission trips, retreats and summer camps in an atmosphere that fosters a deepening relationship with God.

  1. Have a passion for and calling to lead youth.
  2. College Degree and prior experience in working with youth is preferred.
  3. Be youthful in spirit and Holy Spirit driven, able to meet youth where they are and lead them forward to Christ in an accepting life-giving way.
  4. Although being a United Methodist is not required, there must be a desire and willingness to understand the United Methodist Church organization, structure and resources.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Plan and implement weekly middle and high school youth events that foster discipleship.
  2. Lead the Faith Formation/Confirmation experience for young people.
  3. Manage and implement mission trips, retreats, lock-ins and similar activities for youth.
  4. Promote and attend summer youth camp.
  5. Refer youth to professional counseling when appropriate.
  6. Develop and implement a budget for youth ministry including fund raising.
  7. Work closely with volunteers in planning weekly Sunday Christian education lessons.
  8. Participate in weekly staff meetings.
  9. Communicate regularly with youth and their parents, the congregation and the local community through various forms of media such as newsletters, the Sunday bulletin, email and social media sites.
  10. Build, train, inspire and equip a team of committed adult and student volunteers.
  11. Maintain regular office hours.
  12. Participate in continuing education opportunities as approved by the Senior Pastor.
  13. Perform other duties as required by the Senior Pastor.
